Starfish to the Sea

An old man took a walk along
the beach the day following a recent storm. He came upon a young woman who
was carefully picking up starfish
stranded high
on the beach from the previous day’s stormy surf. One by one, she picked-up
a starfish from the sand and walked it down to the shoreline, placing it
gently in the small ocean waves.
The old man asked, “Excuse
me madam, the storm last night was mighty, and this beach must stretch
several
miles in each direction;
there are probably
several hundred
starfish to be saved.” He went on,” Why do you continue….,
you surely can not save all these stranded starfish, how can you make a difference?”
The woman replied,” What
I do does make a difference,” then reaching
down to pick-up another, she said “It is certainly makes a difference
to this starfish.”
